u should get the owner to let you approach the dog so he's not so worried about you....and you don't have to listen to him anymore. he's just defending his turf.:)

Dogs are used to being part of a pack. When they live with humans, they see the humans as the other members of their pack. They also take on the job of warning everyone (that is, barking) when someone's coming to the door because none of the humans do it.

Basically, barking means "Someone I don't know is coming to the cave! You guys come check him out so we can decide if we need to put a hurt on him!"

The dog will mellow out a little bit once he gets to know you, but remember that when you go to the door he doesn't recognize you because he can't smell you through the door.

And ... cats don't do that because they're not pack animals, so they don't have the same hardwired "guard the cave" mentality.

Dogs bark to communicate with you. They can bark to say "Stay away" or to warn their owners that someone they don't know is there. If you walk by a house that has a dog that barks at you, think about it from the dog's perspective - "Hey! I'm telling you to go away!" And guess what? You do! You keep walking and the dog is happy - he did his job. If you talk to the dog as you go by his house, then the dog begins to recognize your voice and you. After a few days, he'll get bored because you aren't silently walking away but acknowledging him. Try it. As you walk by, just say: "I'm going on my way! You've done your job! What a good dog!". Be nice. Don't be mean or throw things or hit the fence or yell at the dog. After a few days of talking nice to him as you walk by, the dog will probably start to ignore you.

A dog's bark is more of a way to signal that he's seeing something he considers suspicious. Since dogs in the wild travel in packs they bark to communicate with others. He may not have the intention to hurt you, as much as he just wants his owner to know that someone is near. Just ignore the dog and he may one day leave you alone.

As for cats, they're solitary creatures. In the wild cats don't need to communicate with others, hence why they don't do so in domestic living either.

Because cats do not bark. LOL. I'm sorry that was cheesy, but I couldn't help it. Cats may not meow or hiss like a dog, but trust me they are just as concerned with who you are. If you are knocking at the door of a residence, and the dog barks, it is almost like the dog is warning/notifying their owner, my chi does it all of the time, and it is annoying, but funny too. Dogs are very loyal and protective, and I guess they feel like that is their way of showing it.

cats cant bark and furthermore dogs bark as a warning to you that they are inside or to alert their owners someone/something is near by.

If you ever hear a cat bark you let me know.. I think cats are worthless unless you live on a farm and have a mouse problem in your barn

Not all dogs bark ike tht either and if cats could bark some of them would as well. My mom and dad have 3 cats and one of them named Sassy she is like a dog when people come over. She will literaly attack the legs of people that come over until she knows them.

Cats can't bark, but they can hiss, and I have known cats to stake out an area and keep people out of it (postman wouldn't deliver).

There are a few real keys to dog training, whether you are trying to train your dog to come when called, sit, stop barking or any other behavior. Understanding their importance is critical to achieving rapid results that are long lasting and help develop the bond between you and your dog. Learn more http://OnlineDogTraining.enle.info/?N5sF

The first is simple; you must win your dogs mind. If you don’t achieve this first then you will be struggling the all the way. When I talk about winning your dogs mind what I really mean is that your dog looks to you for all the decisions. Before you do anything else watch one of the amazing video sites that show you the 5 Golden rules to establishing yourself as the pack leader. If you aren’t putting these in place then you are setting yourself up to fail. Just at the crucial point where you really want your dog to listen they will go and do their own thing. For sure your dog may play ball occasionally or even most of the time, you may even have a dog that is obedient 99% of the time, however if you want a dog who always listens to you and does as you ask then you need to win your dogs mind.

The second key to success is to motivate your dog. It is really important that you discover what it is that your dog enjoys both in terms of exercise and play but also in terms of a reward. If you can make the experience enjoyable then you will both achieve more and look forward to training.

Some dogs love to fetch, others love agility, and other dogs simply love obedience training, or swimming out into water and retrieve. At least to start with find out what your dogs love is and help them develop this, what I am saying is work with your dog. The other point to recognize is to make training enjoyable reward your dog.
