Think TAIL FIRST

The idea is get your TAIL lined up, back in just enough to the nose will clear the spot in front, then get the nose lined up.

Depending on where you have trouble, here are some additional tips.

If you have trouble getting your nose in properly, a TEMPORARY practice solution is to find some package tape or duct tape and tape a long thin rod to your bumper's corner, so that you can see it from driver's seat, and thus know if your nose will make it into the space.

If your problem is in the tail, the trick is line up on the other car's lights. The other car behind has lights. Assume is about as wide as your car. Line up so that if you're sitting normally you see the left side mirror that car's left headlight. That's "about" the right angle. Straighten out and start backing in.

Back up until the nose clears, then turn the wheel to max and ease into the space.

Find an empty parking lot, buy or find a couple empty cardboard boxes (hope it's not too windy there) and mark off a spot to practice parking in.

Practice in a large parking lot without cars. Use cones. I know that there is a lot more stress when you are taking your test, but once you think you got it down, move a car into the spot next to yours and try to park into the space behind theirs.

As long as you do well on the other parts of the test, you'll be fine. I drove over the speed limit (i was nervous) I didn't yield (i forgot) I almost ran a man with his dog over (i didn't see them) and my parallel parking -- I sucked (luckily they were just cones and not real cars) I still passed and received my license. And no it wasn't a man who was grading me but a woman. I'm 34 and still can't parallel park, who cares.

If you're driving a car with back passanger window, drive up to side vehicle just up to the end of the right side back passenger window (The furthest back portion of the window). Then, start to turn your wheel clockwise. Turn the wheel just enough to make a 'gradual' turn in, not sharp. By the time you get a foot from the curb turning the wheel counter clock wise shouldn't be a problem. Good luck!

YEAH!! Do great on the REST of the test so that's the ONLY one you miss! 95percent is better than nothing!! Sorry! I am 45 1/2 and STILL can't parallel park!! I just park faraway and walk. I hate when people make fun of me!!! Ask guys - they seem to be REALLY good at it!

Take the road test in a new Lexus LS460...it'll do all of the parallel parking work for you.

i put rubbermaid trash cans in my driveway and practiced for days. take your test in as little of a car as possible, this makes it easier to park.

The set up for that is the hard part. Be sure to be properly set before you back.
