If you are talking about when you start it. It should come on and go off within 3 seconds or so. If it stays on longer then that you might need a quart of oil or so. If that doesn't work you should that it to get the oil pump looked at. The oil light comes on intill the oil reaches the top of the engine.

If it comes on AT ALL, YOU ARE IN TROUBLE. Stop your car immediately, call someone to bring oil to put into your car, more than one quart. One quart low shouldn't cause the light to come on.

If you keep driving the engine will seize up. The oil is the lubricant that keeps it running.

Oil must be checked regularly...and filled if need be.
