"Isn't Police Work Dangerous?
No! It's a tenacious and harmful myth that police work is dangerous. According to Department of Labor statistics, police work ranks relatively low on ratings of occupational fatalities. Policing has fatality rates comparable to such common occupations as electricians, construction workers, and truckers. Also contrary to common belief, half of all police on the job fatalities are caused by auto accidents, not by guns. The myth of dangerousness keeps too many women from considering police work as a career."

Just for the record, the police have never provided any services to me directly, unless you call lying, pushing my wife, invading my home in an unlawful manner, laying false accusations, and threatening me with murder 'services'.

"What about non-English speaking taxi drivers? They are assaulted pretty regularly. But they don't come to your defense when YOU get assaulted."

Law enforcement work IS dangerous... sometimes these people get KILLED dealing with some of the dangerous morons out there. Dealing with a homicidal maniac might never happen in a 30 year career or it can happen on the first day of a career. Police carry guns for a reason, and as my grandparents were murdered and I have had death threats against me by a mentally ill individual, I'm GLAD that they do.

Police work was once quoted as being: "8 hours of boredom interrupted by 30 seconds of terror, then followed by 3 hours of paperwork".
Yes there are more suburban towns with very lower crime rates than ghettos and innercities with high crime rates, so the statistics are biased.
Trying to catch bad-guys is a very dangerous thing. Cops are dealing with people who want to kill, rape, and steal. People under the influence of drugs, alcohol, and mental illnesses. These people do not want to go to jail, and some will do anything it takes to not get caught. This is what makes it so dangerous, the unknown.

Just because there are jobs that are also dangerous does not make police work any less dangerous. Police officers risk their lives to save others and with all of the crazies out there run the risk of getting shot just for giving someone a ticket. Consider that other proffesion even though they may be considered more dangerous are not dedicated to protecting others.

Well let's see, your everyday store clerk at WalMart gets assaulted ... No, Secretaries in Insurance agencies... Not that either.
What about non-English speaking taxi drivers? They are assaulted pretty regularly. But they don't come to your defense when YOU get assaulted.
OK,here's the deal: the next time someone tries to car-jack your car, beat you unconscious for $23, rape your wife/daughter, road rages out on you then you need to call animal control to save you pansy a ss.

The next time you have a gun wielding maniac running towards you, instead of running away from him, try running towards him to stop him like officers do on a daily basis and then see how dangerous Law Enforcement really is.
Bravo Mikey Loved your response.

Just becuse other jobs are dangerous too doesn't mean police work isn't. That line of reasoning makes little sense. Police work is dangerous because they deal with criminals, many of whom will do anything to stay out of jail.

lol, because it is. Being a cop in most parts of LA is considered a high risk job as compared to most occupational specialties in the corporate world sitting at a desk in air conditioned buildings which are protected by the police. Cops die every day, CEO's do not.

its only safe when they are arresting someone who is generally a law abiding citizen, oops they forgot to pay a fine .
It is ONLY the most second dangerous job behind being a soldier, I have no idea why they claim its dangerous. Duh.
I mean swat, and all police squads, like bomb squads, atf , etc.

Not a myth. Police officers get killed in the line of duty all the time. They are at the sake of mad people and criminals all the time. I admire them for their bravery. I didn't look at your link, by the way. But, like any other job, there can be bad cops employed.
