I was growing beans, cucumbers and tomatoes in dixie cups and pots in my kitchen. When they started to attract ants I moved the pots and dixie cups outside. Due to my heavy school and work schedule I don't always get a chance to water them. I'm lucky if I get to water them every other day. Because I live in California the water sometimes dries up very quickly by the afternoon. When I went to go water them this morning some of my tomatoes appeared to wilt. I had watered them 2 days earlier. How long can plants last without water?

I was able to take care of them until the ants came.

Being in small dixie cups or pots will let them dry out very quickly. I would water tham at least once a day, but don't flood them w/ water.

if you can place the dixie cups in a large flat pan with sides (make sure you have some holes in the cups) then just fill the pan with water that way you do not have to water as often

That's not the issue. If you can't take care of them now,why bother. Give them away. You'll never be able to take care of a garden.
