It is an adaptation that encourages us to seek out solace (love) from people around us, to help each other, and to change whatever brought about the sadness to begin with. All of these social bonding behaviors are adaptive, in an evolutionary sense. It also causes us to slow down a little and conserve our energies.

You get to feeling sad or unhappy when there is a reduction to the level of endorphins in your system. The drop can be a reaction to seeing, hearing or experiencing something unpleasing.

There are some things in life that happen that just make us sad. It means we have a heart. It's good to tug on it once and a while to make sure it's still working. If we are hard hearted we are loosing our good heartedness.
It's good to get sad once in a while.
