you may be seconded into the navy dont forget its a federal service unit. once you sign up your as's is theirs. im ex army all i know is army life but the coastguard will have to do everything from stopping illegal entry and drug seizures. there is a slight chance you will be sent to iraq so why not serve the navy instead at least you'll know what the score is and be in the "shi't" our military is pretty much fubar as it is. next the postal service will be sent in: federal employees after all.

Just a little history lesson. Right now the Coast Gaurd is part of the Dept of Homeland Security. Before that dept was organized they were part of the Dept of Transportation. In time of war, the Coast Gaurd comes under the control of the Navy.
Coast Gaurdsmen have been apart of the Navy in wartime since WWII. Since Coastgaurdmen are proficient with the handling of smallcraft, during WWII, a lot of them were the coxswains on the landing crafts that hit the beaches at Normandy, Italy, and in the Pacific.

YES there is a chance that you could get sent to patrol off the coast of Iraq or Iran. I have several pictures of a CG cutter refeuling off of my husband's Naval vessel 2 years ago. There have even been CG casualties in the war.
If you are against war, that makes you a very poor candiadte for ANY branch of military service. It is their purpose in life to fight wars.. even the Coast Guard.
If you are unwilling to go wherever they deem necessary, then you shouldn't join at all.

Paulie,
This probably isn't for you then...
Take the Gulf War out of the picture and you will find the USCG has been in running gunfight with drug dealers in the Carribean and Gulf of Mexico for the last 40 years. Before that it was the Rum Runners. Smugglers fight to the death and you are in the frontlines.
If you are such a wuss that this is distateful- join the Peace Corps

Being "against" war is one thing... not willing to participate is another. If you're "against" war you shouldn't serve any military branch as that is the main goal of the military... to prevent war but go to it, if the need exists. Go join the girl scouts and leave the protection of your butt to real Americans that can see beyond their own nose and care about more than themselves or their own selfishness/self centeredness!

A friend of mine joined the Navy because she felt she could help from the IT perspective but they really trained her for shooting people. So she was dishonorably discharged for non-compliance. War is inevitable when you join the military, but we all know the real reason. You don't want to go to war in this war because it is unjust and serves only the shell companies of the administration. Otherwise we all know you'd be more than willing to defend your country, yes? I feel your pain.

U.S Coast Guard cutters are busy in the Persian Gulf right now. Maybe you can get to shoot a machine gun or the 20mm cannon.

you comprehend whilst of the justifications that the aftermath of Katrina grow to be so undesirable grow to be through fact the Louisana national look after grow to be in Iraq and could no longer get lower back to do their in the previous generic undertaking. commonly, the Guardn might have presented protection, etc after a organic catastrophe yet their undertaking has been more desirable. I even have deployed with look after to this point yet no Coast look after, a minimum of no longer yet.
