They go back to the days when cavemen sometimes settled in a cave which had a hole in its ceiling. Light came in and campfire smoke went out. It was like paradise.

A skylight at its simplest is just a hole in a roof. What's to invent?

I really don't know, but since you have an interest in engineering, why not come up with an easy way to keep them clean so you can see the sky through them? I'm serious...I hate climbing on my roof every spring & after several rains...I'm not that young anymore, but you should be able to see out of windows, no matter where they are. Hope you come up with something that makes you millions...I'll be your first customer!
