Different offshoots of a major belief system, each with tiny variations, making it not quite the same as the others.

There are so many denominations for several reasons. (1) Each denomination has a slightly different doctrine or emphasis from the others. (2) As people started churches, they simply gave them different names. (3) Denominations are good in that if you attended a Baptist church in one town, and then moved to another town, you could attend a similar Baptist church in the new town. The Lutheran denomination was named after Martin Luther. The Methodists got their name because their founder, John Wesley, was famous for coming up with “methods” for spiritual growth. Presbyterians are named for their view on church leadership - the Greek word for elder is "presbyteros." Baptists got their name because they have always emphasized the importance of baptism.

We, as believers, must believe the same on the essentials of the faith, but beyond that there is great latitude in how a Christian should worship, serve, and live his life. This latitude is what causes so many different flavors of Christianity. Diversity is a good thing, but disunity is not. If two churches disagree doctrinally, it is fine that they remain separate. This separation, though, does not lift the responsibility Christians have to love one another (1 John 4:11-12) – and ultimately be united as one in Christ (John 17:21-22).

A religious denomination (also simply denomination) is a subgroup within a religion that operates under a common name, tradition, and identity. In Islam such subgroups are referred to as "sects" rather than denominations[citation needed].

The term is frequently used to describe various groupings of Christian churches ( for example, Eastern Orthodoxy, Catholicism and the many varieties of Protestantism) (Main article: Christian denomination.) It is also used to describe the four organised branches of Judaism (Orthodox, Conservative, Reform and Reconstructionist), and (less often, though it would not be inappropriate) to describe the two main branches of Islam (Sunni and Shia).

In Hinduism the major Deity or philosophical belief functions as the identifier of a denomination and typically each has distinct cultural and religious practices. The major denominations include Saivism, Shaktism, Vaishnavism, Smartism, and Halumatha.

Denominations are groups within the Christian church. These groups may come about as a result of a revival of move of God in which the people ban together and found a series of churches dedicated to advancing or preserving that movement. Denominations such as the Methodist in the 18th came through this method. Or they may come about becasue of split within an existing group over doctrines or practices. One such split produced the Catholic and the Orthodox churches in the 11th century.

Denominations are the result of historic attempts by false Christians to convince true Christians to join their groups. Today, many Christians have abandoned denominations to form their own groups, often known as house churches and independent churches.

Denominations are smaller groups within a major religion. For instance, Catholic, Episopalian, Baptist, Lutheran, Methodist, are denominations of Christianity. Orthodox, Conservative, and Reform are denominations of Judaism. Shi'ite and Sunni are denominations of Islam.

Denominations can either be used to place value on currency, or religion. In either case, you have to trust the creator of the denomination. When people gather together, whether in business, of fellowship, they require a common standard, or measure of trust.

In business, treaties are signed as a measure of trust to facilitate trade. In religion, interfaith councils are convened to help differing faiths exchange the fruits of their good works.

Business usually base their standard of trust on gold.

They are different sections of any given religion : Baptist, Catholic, Pentecostal, etc., all fall under the umbrella of Christianity.

Think about it like a sports league : there are various divisions and conferences, each with different philosophies on how to achieve success, but they all work for the same organization.
