file properties show file as MPG?

I downloaded a musicvideo and the format is MPG. I have tried numerous programs to convert this (ie;I want to be able to burn to VCD) but every program I have tried says 'File format error' I am tearing my hair out please can someone help? What should I use to convert this file or should I just send it to the recycle bin! Please help before I go mad!! Thankyou.

Just because the file extension is MPG doesn't always mean it is really MPG.

Use a video checker like GSpot to check the file and see what it REALLY is. THEN you'll know to rename it properly (if needed) and what to do with it.
