Why do Mexicans answer the phone and say "Bueno" Why not Hola?

This is a way of answering the phone that comes from the begining of the phone technology.
At a begining, phone service was not very reliable, so people use to answer "bueno?" as for "is the communication ok?" or "is it good?" in order to make sure both sides of the phone line were working properly. So this "bueno?" somehow survived until our days.
Other common ways of mexican phone answers are "Diga?", "Si?", "Aló?" (like frenchs)

The intonation was more like a question Bueno? rather than as a salution Buenos Dias!

So the anwer that says, "Is the line good for you?" is probably the correct answer.

"Bueno," in this case, is just short for "Buenos Dias" which also means "Hello" or "Good day" in Spanish.

Because it could stand for a polite "Buenos dias", "buenas tardes" or "buenos noches". ¡Hóla! is more of a face-to-face greeting.

yes , yes,, that's strange heard by an american or an eurpean but in spain lot of people say BUENAS... it doesn't have any traduction into english and BUENAS has become BUENO in mexico.

because that is their slang just like some people here answer the phone with yeah or whats up or what u want and not hello ....lol
