the foot pedals controll two things, the rudders and the breaks. the breaks are activated by pushing the top of the pedal and are also independent of one another (the left foot controls the left wheel break and the right controls the right) the bottom of the foot pedal controlls the rudder which controlls the yaw of the airplane. also on the ground they turn the front wheel (in most planes) to turn the plane

If you push the left pedal the rudder will make the plane turn to the right, when inflight you need to use both ailrons and ruddder together, on the ground it will make the wheel turn.
When planes are landing they are both pushed at the same time activating the breaks.

The pedals are like the steering wheel. Press the left pedal to turn left, the right pedal to turn right. The "steering wheel" in the plane causes roll. Turn the wheel left, and you rolll left, turn it right to roll right. Pull it back to go up, and push it forward to go down. And yes, usually the pedals also work the brakes when you are on the ground.

brakes&rudder. one advice: don't push hard on them while in the air! the rudder commands are extremely sensitive. if you abuse them, you may end up destroying the rudder, or worse, losing control of the aircraft. at high speeds, the airflow is so powerful, that a sudden and violent rudder movement may cause a failure of the bolts/axle that holds it in place, ripping it off, and pulling a part of the hydraulic lines out, leading to hydraulic failure and almost no control on the aircraft.

I would imagine they are for brakes.
But I had no idea what foot pedals were used for until I read this thread. Actually, I forgot there were pedals in airplanes. lol Interesting information.

foot pedals are for rudder control. These are the primary instruments used by pilots while taxiing at an airport, and they are used to counteract any crosswinds or winds while in the air.
