I have gone on vision quests and have returned with my spirit animal. Cheeky critter. Went with me on my quest, helped me search and came back with me. I had to laugh. He showed himself to me three times and I did not understand until I came back who he really was.
This was an animal I had grown up with and had dreams about. I should have known this critter was my life's guide.
At first I was somewhat disappointed, I had wanted an animal of brute strength and power. But the one I have come to accept is a good fit for me and has been most beneficial to my well being. The other more powerful animals have come through as helpers and then were gone.
For those who have an animal keep showing up in their lives the following site can give them clues on what need is being fulfilled on this life's path: http://www.geocities.com/~animalspirits/index1.html

The Domestic Cat is my water spirit and the center. Yes, it's unhappy about it, we've had this conversation before. Raven is Fire, Crane is air. Oh, did I mention I have a personality disorder? There's a reason I have more then one animal spirit. It's not that confusing once you start living with it really.

I've just always kind of sensed them around me, though they would show up in artwork and stuff from an early age.... Swan, Mouse, and Spider hang out with me the most..... Mouse and spider hang around my house all the time. The more creative I get, the more spiders show up. If a mouse is killed by human means in my house, they show up in my dreams, and bother me, then I will find a dead mouse the next day. If the cats get them, or the snake that lives in the walls, they don't bother me then, if it's nature, they understand that, but if I have something to do with killing them, they bother me then...I had a really interesting experience with a group of 3 swans once....went to a park with some friends, there were 3 swans on the pond...I left my friends to go walking to the other side of the pond...the swans veered as a group, and swam right around to the area where I was hanging out. They just kind of sat there on the water, right at the edge, looking at me. Then I looked down, and saw three swan feathers in the water, right where I could reach them. Well, it just happened that I was looking for a white feather that day, and had sensed that I would find one outside prior to that. I selected one of the feathers, feeling it would be innapropriate to take all 3, I think the other 2 were for others. I thanked them for thier gift, and as a group they turned around and swam off again. i'll never forget it.... My friends all commented about the swans and the way they were acting :)

Some First Nations People believe that if you go on a vision quest, and are worthy, you may meet your spirit guide, often in the form of an animal. My spirit guide is the mountain lion, and my protector is the moose, but my clan is the loon. I discovered my guides when I went on a vision quest. It is a difficult road to travel, but if you are willing and allowed, it can be so worth the effort.

I met mine in real life; I never saw him in any dreams; just like you it is the wolf. I have had two experiences with wolves. Well, you could say three if you count the time I went to an animal reserve in Wisconsin when I was a little girl, oh I had to be in the fifth or sixth grade. There were some wolves in a cage and as I was walking by I felt this strange feeling that we knew each other. A couple of years later I went to the home of a friend, they owned a collie wolf hybrid. When the dog first saw me he bowed his head walked over and licked my hand. My friend told me she had never seen him act like that before. She told me that he hates strangers because of the wolf in him. My cousin told me on a later date, she had gone to her house, too, that the same dog growled at her. Anyways that is when I learned they both thought I was some kind of freak. Now the last time happened when I had gone to this farm up in Eden Wisconsin. My b/f worked for this farmer who owned him. My first night there I saw no dog running around so I naturally thought he didn't have one, the man was an elderly man. The next day I woke up and had this strange urge to go outside; it was as though something was calling me. I put on my coat, found myself walking down a path I'd never taken before, still I knew exactly where I was going. When I got to where I was going he was standing right there as big as life tethered to a heavy chain. Our first initial contact consisted him wagging his tail and looking at me as though "well it's about time you got here." For the first five minutes we just sat there and stared at one another, he came forward, I don't how or why, but I started snarling at him. It was then that I saw the emotion in his eyes, an emotion that spoke of being hurt. I knelt down held out the palm of my hands practically holding my breath, figuring if he were going to take a bite out of me it would be then. You know what happened he took my hand in his mouth and held it there for five minutes. While he was doing this I just so happened to look up his owner was standing a distance off shaking his head in disbelief. The dog or Wolf as I called him let go; just as I turned around, his owner through his arms up in despair and unchained him. I remember we used to walk the farm. As far as I know I am the only person who has been able to go near him. I was told after I had done it, several people had tried to approach him they could not, either they'd almost get their hands ripped off and or their throats torn out.

Be cooperative with this being as very important lessons are coming your way. Have confidence in your travels, and persuits. This guardian is realigning your awarnesses in your consciousness nad the sub conscious. All is good for you.

I didn't know that I had one till I had an 18 wheeler hit me on the freeway. Thought I was going to die, but I walked away from it. My car wasn't so lucky. I was commuting nearly 200 miles roundtrip. Shortly afterward, I saw hawks everywhere I went. One was sitting on the guardrail a few feet from my car, looking at me as I passed at about 70 mph. That convinced me right there! From then on, whenever I saw one near my car, I felt protected.

Did you know that dogs can see spirits, some people say that if you take dog tears into your eyes, you can see spirits as dogs do?
Why a dog howls for no reason what so ever even though you don't see anything in front of you?
This is proof that dogs can see what people cannot see.

I am an Apache Indian and in our tradition we have clans that relate to four distinct animals, but as for "animal spirits" ~ I can't say that we have these. Some native Indians are known to go on vision quest and during these vision quest they are shown/given a spirit to guide them in their life journey (usually in the form of animals). It might help to contact such a group/tribe that practice this ritual ~ you might find it helpful in understanding your question. Much luck to you.
