Mission work abroad is amazing! If you get the opportunity to do it, I suggest you go!
I've done some mission work in Egypt with my mom, who is doing a Bible ministry in the country. But my primary experience is in Mexico. It was amazing! God worked so much in a short time (about a week) there.
We did a "water ministry," handing out water and gospel tracts to workers crossing the border into the United States. We helped fix up a student ministry building while also hosting a worship night. We also went to small towns in Mexico and put up shows, including miming and body worship. While there, we also helped to build a church for the community after their last one was destroyed by a storm.
The best moments, however, were our days and nights spent in an orphanage. We spoke about God, but really, the best part was just showing God's love to these beautiful, amazing kids! We all connected with several children, making it very hard to say goodbye. I also particularly enjoyed cooking breakfast for the kids and doing concrete work at the orphanage.
College kids from our church have also gone to Korea, China, Russia, Native American reservations, Eskimo areas in Canada, Eritrea, Russia and other places, and almost overwhelming the response is extremely positive.

Yes, Portugal.
Wow, there's a lot to say for the experience - a mission is so wonderful and so difficult at the same time.
It's so great to be able to spend time focused on your faith, meet different people, learn another language and culture, have some amazing spiritual experiences.
At the same time, I remember being tired all the time - and your emotions are much more intense. Like your normal range of emotions that usually take a month to go through, will all happen in a day.
All in all, I'm very glad I went, I think it has been a great blessing in my life. I don't know how it worked, but something about going on a mission made me grow a backbone - and it's been really nice having that higher level of courage ever since.
Best wishes

In college I was apart of a team of 6 students who spent 3 months in Russia. The experience was amazing. First, just getting past cultural differences, and then seeing how some of those we met, would sacrifice so much for a belief in God. Russians are very intuitive and think far more deeply about life than many weterners. They were a fascinating people and the experience forever changed my life.

My niece and her son spent time building a church in Mexico last summer (does that count?). From what she told me, it was a very rewarding experience. The villagers were friendly and quite happy to have this, everyone was hospitable. She must have enjoyed it because she plans to do something similar this year.

Use the area between your ears before you ask questions.
