I was watching Band of Brothers the other day and wondered how and why certain soldiers were assigned certain guns, such as the Carbrine or M1 or Thompson?

The regular weapon of the G.I. was the M1 Garande. The M1 carbine was more of a NCO or CO's weapon, basically an intermediate between the .45 colt 1911 and the Garande.
Heavier firepower came from the BAR or Browning Automatic Rifle.
The Thompson sub machine gun and the Grease Gun, where heavily used in sqauds also, the grease gun being a cheaper sub machine gun that were produced in greater quantities.
I suggest that you go to a good military museum or do some Internet searches and see the vast variety of weaponry that all countries used in WWII. It is very interesting.

Okay... for the US Army... the STANDARD weapon issued to a soldier would be the M1-Garand. Some units will then have a heavy-weapon in the unit via the BAR (Browning Automatic Rifle).

The M-1 Carbine was for tankers, NCO's, officers, and rear-echelon types... it's REALLY a pistol cartidge fired in a lite-rifle ! The parachute groups also liked the Carbine due to it's light-weight, smaller size, and the ability to carry MORE ammo.

The M1A1 Thompson and M-3 (grease-gun) were also for tankers, NCO's, officers, and rear-echelon types... same reasons.

The US Marine Corps started the war with the Springfield 30.06 Bolt action rifle... and considered it to be a superior RIFLE to the M-1 Garand. At least until they got ahold of some M-1's dropped by the Army at Guadalcanal.

So REALLY... a SOLDIER (rifleman) is issued an M-1 Garand.

There's been a lot of research into battlefield weaponry since the exploitation of gunpowder. A rifle is a good weapon for a soldier, being accurate over more range than a pistol or SMG. The Thompson SMG was designed to fire a lot of shots in a short period. A pistol is an excellent weapon for use indoors or at very close quarters

The army issues 'special' weapons based on training. Not every soldier has the right temperment to use an automatic weapon so the army trains certain soldiers to use them and then equips these soldiers so they can improve the 'value' of their squad.

As for those particular guns (in case that's what you meant and if it is I apologise for the waffle) they were what was in production at the time.

Different guns are given according to rank mainly. The Thompson is alway Given to an officer M1 Carbine's are given to the grunts. I cant remember how many exactly but i think every 10th soldier is given a BAR ( Browning automatic rifle). Hope this helps

To think of any conflict may be executed with out that occuring is stupid/stupid. combating out of uniform, like some others have reported, is a definite Forces tactic used to infiltrate worldwide places earlier an entire-blown conflict happens. Desecrating Enemy bodies is unquestionably performed so plenty extra by using the enemies that the U. S. has fought, fairly the terrorists of right this moment. Torture is a relative term and there is on no account been a conflict that somebody wasn't tortured in. Killing prisoners grow to be thrown in there by using Tarantino for marvel fee and clearly it worked or you does no longer be asking those questions. And interestingly you ignored the area the place it grow to be a FICTIONAL tale no longer consistent with any actual operation or experience in international conflict 2. additionally, you may desire to evaluate that up till the fulfillment of the Normandy Invasion, the allied powers have been dropping the conflict and have been prepared to take desperate measures to win at any value whether it meant putting infantrymen in civilian clothing to get in the back of the strains. And as quickly as a weapon alongside with an AK47 has been removed from the floor close to a corpse of an insurrection, he's all at once appeared at as a civilian casualty by using the clicking for the reason that he now lacks a weapon, so in line with risk your sources might desire to end the **** now and then attempting to make the troops seem a million situations worse than they're. whilst I consider you that Tarantino is over the best and especially plenty a nut, I strongly disagree with your assessment of the present concern and that of the fashionable media.

All the above are good answers about the guns but don’t answer your specific question about what soldier gets what gun. It is done by the army’s Table of Organization and Equipment. This TO&E tells each squad what weapons they will have, and even what ammo to carry for those weapons. It goes up to how many jeeps or tanks in a company or battalion.

EDIT: of course that never answers why the smallest guy has to always carry the biggest weapon.

Soldiers were issued with equipment which was easy to produce in large numbers. Weapons were brought into service sometimes to counter a weapon the enemy was using.

It usually depended on the fire support in which the team supplies. If you ever played "Brother In Arms: Road to Hill 30" you have two teams in which, one supplies the initial attack (flanks, assaults) and the second team gives cover fire (these are the guys with Thompsons and BAR's as account that that they fire alot)...so overall, it depends on the mission at hand and what there up against.

the "Tommy gun" Thompson sub machine gun .45, and the m8 garand were the two more common infantry weapons. the m8 had a good rate of fire and was very accurate while the 45 was more efficient for suppressive fire and cqb. they were assigned different weapons to create a more diversified attack force. one gun does not work best in "every" situation.
