my son got suspended from school and they sent a letter to my house and on one line it said, However, John will be permited, to the extent possible, to make up academic work missed.

yes, if u want your son to do the work, then you have to arrange for him to do it while away from school

John may make up his school work and get grades for it. You are lucky. Go to the school and get the assignments. Telephone before and make sure that the teachers have the work ready for John.

Make your son do the work at the kitchen table. Take it back to school. His academic grades will not be harmed.

His science lab work may not be able to be completed, and other 'in school' stuff - PE and things.

Sorry. I also have a mis-behaving teen. They get over it.

It means that YOU have to go to the school to pick up your son's assignments, then make sure the delinquent completes them.
