I'll go to sporting events, or what have you and submit them to the local papers. They decide whether or not to take them.

If you have ever heard of the writers market. It's a book that lists all the publishers in the country for magazines, books, online articles, etc... and there is a section for photography. It will list what they want photographs of and how much they will pay if they use your photo. (I want to say that they came out with a book specifically for photography and not just a section in the writers market but I'm not sure)

As a freelance photographer you must market yourself for whatever type of work you want to do.

I promote myself as a commercial and portrait photographer.

Photos for business advertising, gatherings, publicity
Wedding pictures, 25th and 50th anniversary celebrations
Birthday party pictures
In small towns, school pictures
News pictures (cruising with camera and scanner), fires, accidents, natural disasters (floods, tornadoes, storms)

Sports, feature type stuff, community events....big challenges are getting the shot and then getting them submitted quickly.

Take pictures...lots and lots of pictures...and try to sell them to whichever publications you think might be interested.
