I do not think that objectively stating the Islamic doctrines and forming an opinion about them is "attacking" Islam. Yes, some do indeed rely strictly upon rhetoric and polemics, and are in attack mode. Yet, you seem to be saying that any commentary directed against the doctrines of Islam is an attack. I disagree. To accept your premise, there would never be any productive dialogue between any religious group.
I have found Islam to be philosophically indefensible, being internally incoherent or undermining human reason and experience. Moreover I do not believe the Allah of Islam is the God of Christianity. See http://www.letusreason.org/Islam6.htm
Islamic theological doctrine requires an offensive position by all Muslims.
Muslims are quick to point to the violence recorded in the Christian bible and claim that Christianity’s early history was violent, too. But unlike the Bible where some very awful HISTORY is recorded, the violence described in the Qur’an is part of Islamic THEOLOGY. This is a very significant distinction between the two belief systems.
The famous Muslim scholar and “father of modern history” Ibn Khaldun (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ibn_Khaldun) states the dichotomy between jihad and defensive warfare thus:
In the Muslim community, the holy war [i.e. jihad] is a religious duty, because of the universalism of the Muslim mission and the obligation to convert everybody to Islam either by persuasion or by force... The other religious groups did not have a universal mission, and the holy war was not a religious duty for them, save only for purposes of defense... They are merely required to establish their religion among their own people. That is why the Israeilites after Moses and Joshua remained unconcerned with royal authority [e.g. a “caliphate”]. Their only concern was to establish their religion [not spread it to the nations]… But Islam is under obligation to gain power over other nations (The Muqudimmah, vol. 1 pg. 473).
Islam's religious leaders must codify their acceptable theologies, giving special attention to the violence now part of the Sharia, Muhammad’s Sunna (4:24, 4:92, 8:69, 24:33, 33:21, 33:50), and the sword and anti-Christian verses of the Qur’an (e.g., 4:74, 4:91, 8:12, 9:5, 9:29, 33:35-36, 59:2).
Islamic theologians must universally agree on what it means to be a True Muslim, and cast out (shun, excommunicate, etc.) those that do not.
Just as Christians can readily identify the “cults” claiming to be Christian, so must Muslims be able to do once there is a defined set of core beliefs that make a Muslim a True Muslim. Then Muslim leaders should defend these theologies against heretics loudly and publicly.

Well, you did misspell Jesus, which is the son of God to Christians, but I excuse you. I don't hate Muslims nor have I attacked them. Not all Americans are paranoid. However, there are some Muslim extremists who have gotten something wrong, because they think that killing "infidels" is okay. I've heard that they have taken a verse from the Koran and misinterpreted it. I don't understand how extremists can claim they are doing something for God when they are obviously doing something for Satan. They are killing their own people and people from all over the world. Those are the Muslims the media shows, they don't show the peaceful ones very often. Obviously, you and I both realize that you cannot believe everything the media says. They are biased and try to get a story that will make people watch. If there is any group I am frustrated with it is the media, not all the media, but the ones who are trying to get people angry at other people groups.

Perhaps if Islam weren't at war with unbelievers as part of the prime directive for global sharia law then people will stop attacking Islam.

Can you stop attacking Christianity with the false claims made by your religion about Jesus and the Holy Bible? I didn't think so. Will Muslims stop killing everyone that gets in their way, even other Muslims? Probably not. Will islamic countries leave Israel and The West alone? They never have. Maybe islam needs to change.
May God Bless you.

I agree with you, to a certain extent, although you are ignoring the horrific things that terrorists do in the name of Islam.
Christians do the same thing, they ignore the ethnic cleansing that occurred in Bosnia at the hands of Christians.
Both groups say that this behavior doesn't represent their true religion, and these people are not real Muslims/Christians.
The truth is that these people all believe they are absolutely doing God's will. They just have a different interpretation of your holy text. Neither Christians or Muslims can honestly state that there aren't verses in their holy books that can encourage violence. The truth is that there are many verses in each which explicitely promote it. Kind Muslim/Christians choose to ignore or reinterpret those verses to mean something different.
Radical Muslims/Christians interpret them to be literal and carry them out with an honest belief that they are doing God's will. A person doesn't blow themselves up without a strong belief that they are doing the will of God.
The problem lies in both holy texts. They are too confusing and unclear which leads to violence and death.

Dear dew,
I suspect you come from a culture where people are not free to express their religious and political skepticism. I can appreciate how you may interpret comments posted here as specifically attacking Islam, but you are mistaken. The conflict here is mostly between those who believe in God and those who don't. Since you are obviously a believer, you and your faith may be on the recieving end of some criticisms which you imagine are directed at your specific faith, but which were actually directed at all forms of religious superstitiion.
I imagine you are a refined civilized woman who came here seeking a peaceful discussion of various religious beliefs. What you found was a dog-fight between two extremely polarized factions: right-wing fundamentalist Christians who are seeking to undermine America's traditional political freedoms and left-wing liberal atheists who are fighting to keep America free of religious bigotry. To be honest, this forum is possibly the roughest, most uncivilized religious site on the net. While you are welcome to stay and participate in this vigorous debate, I suspect you won't find it much to your liking. Perhaps one of the Believers here can direct you to any of hundreds of more pleasant, far more civilized sites, where atheists are not welcome to speak the truth.

Yes, when the clerics start to excommunicate some of the heretic "insurgent fundamentalists" who they claim are violating the "peaceful, tolerant" nature of Islam.
Assuming that is, Islam DOES stand for "Peace and Understanding" as a group here at Yahoo! claims! That group blocks ALL my attempts to post!

Don't fret none about Islam. At times I wish people would stop posting like this; it makes no sense. All it is doing is drawing attention when all we should do is live our lives.
Edit: Heart of, I don't mean this to be snotty, so please don't take it that way. There are churches in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria and I have seen them over in Iraaq; none of which have been torn down. It could be in Iraaq they were blasted by bombs and so were the mosques.
Anyways I am a Muslim and I wish you all a very nice day.

If Islam would say 'Jews have the right to own Israel and have the right to govern that land and America has the right to be friends with them and Muslims should stop blowing things up all over the world.' then I would think better of them.
The only people attacking anyone is Islam attacking anyone that they see as Israel's friends. America is defending, not attacking.

I live in America and we do not have a ruler. We are allowed to think, unlike most Islamic people. We are very intelligent and can read, unlike Mohammad. We are able to read the Koran and understand what it stands for. We don't need the media to tell us. The Islamic people lack the most important part of religion and that is Jesus is God and died for our transgressions.
