I'm no expert but I believe that 'he' is not either of their names and so doesn't this go against the rules of the Enlgish language?

surely it shows less respect because people aren't using his name?

like the expression 'who's she, the cats mother?'

I respect my mother more than anything, but I would still write she not She. I don't understand how it shows respect.

When Christians started translating the Bible into English, they did not understand that God was not their god's name. As a result, they capitalize God as if it was a name.

Since calling the Christian god God is illogical, they assume that he has special capitalization rules.

Extreme respect maybe? I don't know. When writing about him. I just use the rules of the English language. Jesus said 'he' was the Lord of Abraham. See?

As others said it's a sign of respect - but also within many religious circles, the words "He" or "Him" have also become titles for God (kind of like saying "The He" or "The Him"), and is therefore proper English to capitalize it.

They have been successfully enforcing a stupid rule. I am consciously making an effort to refer "god" as "he". No special rule for god.

He is the true name of god. Bow down to He!!! He is the magnificent procrastinator, waits eons before getting to work!

I'm sure He doesn't mind how you spell it. People consider it reverential to refer to Him with a cap H. It has more to do with how they wish to be perceived by their peers than by God.

Because he's considered higher than a person, and it's a sign of respect.

I guess I was influenced by Christianity, because I refer to my Gods as "He, She, and They." :-)
