Right, the Virgin Mary, how come she is commonly described as a 'prostitute' in the bible (and discredited according to many scholars as highlighted in the Da Vinci code), yet she is a Virgin? Without sounding too crude did she just do 'other things with other parts' to make her money?

Is that why Jesus was attracted to her, did he think he could crack her?

OK, you're very confused: the prostitute Mary was a different Mary.

On the other hand, a lot of the answerers aren't very up-to-date either: the identification of the prostitute Mary with Mary Magdalene is now considered rather suspect. It seems they were different Marys too.

Of course, It's worth adding that not even all Christians believe in the perpetual virginity of Jesus's mother. After all, the gospels mention Jesus's brothers on several occasions. Orthodox Catholics, among others, explain this as referring to his cousins, or as Joseph's sons from a previous marriage. This is possible, but I think a bit silly. I just don't see what would be so wrong with Mary having sex with her husband after she'd had Jesus. In fact, it would be ridiculous for her not to have.

Of course, even her virginity at Jesus's birth is questionable: this may well derive ultimately from a mistranslation, giving "virgin", when all that was meant was "young woman" (even Latin virgo, whence "virgin", is similarly ambiguous).

Oscar I apologize for the sheer ignorance of some members in answering your question, there is no need for this type of behavior.
Look there were quite a few Mary`s mentioned in the Gospels, the Virgin Mary is and was the Mother of Jesus, Mary of Magdala or Mary Magdalene as she is also called was a prostitute and repented of her sinful life when she heard Jesus preach and saw his Miracles.
She was never His lover in the way that Dan Browne in the Da Vinci code suggests, this is just reckless and unsound theology,it is the silly talk of non-believers that has been used to smear both Christ and Mary Magdalene.
Jesus loved Mary but He was not in love with her,too different concepts here and it is an insult to the sinless and Holy Savior to suggest otherwise.
Mary experienced great abuse of her person because of her profession, men treated her with scorn and used her as they needed,Jesus gave her back her human dignity but even more than this He forgave all her sins and restored her self esteem, for this and the fact that she knew He was the Messiah she loved him with a pure and honest love that reflected the reality of her conversion.

I think you are confusing the Virgin Mary with Mary Magdalene. They are 2 different people. The Virgin Mary was truly a virgin, and was blessed with the baby Jesus from God. This is something you just have to believe in or you don't. Please don't believe most of what is in the DaVinci Code movie! It is very misleading. Jesus wasn't attracted to the Virgin Mary, this was His mother. Again, you are confused by the movie. He wasn't attracted to Mary Magdalene either, which is what the movie would have you believe. This movie is fictitious. Only believe the bible. Not some goofy movie made by man.

There is the Virgin Mary - the mother of Jesus, who was impregnated by God, or so the story goes.

Then there is Mary of Magdalen, aka, Maria Magdalena, who was a prostitute who converted her ways and abandoned that lifestyle. She then followed Jesus' teachings. Christian Churches believe that Mary Magdalen was merely a follower of Christ. The movie the di vinci code, as well as other sources, claim that she was the wife of Jesus and produced children with him, thus producing a royal blood line descendent of God.

LOL...well, first off, you're confusing the "Virgin" Mary with Mary Magdalene. Secondly, never reference "The Da Vinci Code" if you want to be taken seriously by anybody - "Christians" OR legitimate, responsible scholars. Thirdly, even the Magdalene is never described as a "prostitute" in the gospels, but as one "out of whom went seven devils," which may be a veiled reference to her prior membership in some pagan cult of Venus, who is associated with the number 7. Her identification as a whore is part of later "Christian" tradition - perhaps an attempt to weave the old "Virgin-Whore-Mother-Crone" symbolism into Christianity, which is, after all, nothing more than a hotch-pot of hijacked paganism.

The Virgin Mary (Jesus's Mother) was given that name because at the time of conception she was a virgin. The child was conceived by the agency of the Holy Spirit, and Mary was a virgin at the time of the birth, as predicted by the angel Gabriel.

Mary Magdelene (Jesus's Friend). In fact, the Bible does not say anywhere that Mary was a prostitute. The first mention of Mary as a prostitute seems to come in a sermon by Pope Gregory the Great, in AD 591 - more than five centuries after Mary lived ( and more than two hundred and fifty years after the Council of Nicaea).

This idea seems to have been the result of confusing three different women, two of whom were both called Mary. (Mary was far the most common name for women in the New Testament.)

In Luke's Gospel, chapter 7 verses 36-50 there is a story about a 'sinful woman' who annointed Jesus. This sinful woman does not have a name. Immediately after this story, at the beginning of chapter 8, Luke introduces Mary. This may have contributed to the confusion.

Not only that, but John's Gospel chapter 12 verses 1-8 records a story about a different woman who annointed Jesus. She was called Mary - Mary of Bethany.

So there are three women:

Mary Magdalene, who we read about at the beginning of Luke chapter 8
an un-named sinful woman who anoints Jesus in Luke chapter 7
Mary of Bethany, who anoints Jesus in John chapter 12
Identifying any of these women with each other is sheer speculation. If the woman in Luke 7 had been Mary Magdalene, there was no reason for Luke not to say so. If the Church had been intent on smearing Mary's reputation, surely it would have helped do this if he had identified the woman in chapter 7 as Mary. But he did not.

It looks as if Pope Gregory confused these women, and that is how he came to label Mary as a prositute. But there is no reliable, early historical evidence that she was a prostitute. And if she had been, it really would not have mattered anyway.

As we have seen, the authentic historical records about Mary Magdalene are quite limited, but such as they are, they paint her in a good light (one of Jesus's supporters; someone who stayed by his cross when most of his male disciples had run away; someone who went to his tomb to make sure his body was prepared for burial). If the suggestion that she was a prostitute was part of a smear campaign, it was remarkably late in the game, and remarkably ineffective, since it did not come to light until more than five hundred years after the beginning of the church, and three hundred years after the Council of Nicaea.

I would say that you are indeed confused! Do you think there is only one Oscar in the whole world? Many Mary's were mentioned in the Bible. No where in the Bible does it say that even Mary Magdalen was the same Mary who was a prostitute! There was the Mary who washed Jesus' feet then dried them with her hair (Her sister's name was Martha)

You have the Mary's confused, it seems!

The virgin Mary is usually how Catholics refer to Jesus' mother, if I haven't made a mistake and perhaps am confused myself.

And please show a little respect toward us and the Bible! There were a great number of Mary's then.
One of the ones that cleaned up her life became a Saint, a Born Again, and is now probably in heaven.

So perhaps, since your mouth is so lacking in respect -- you yourself might be leading a life worse than she did?

One of the cornerstones of Christian belief is based on the teaching that Christ remained unmarried, a virgin, and had no offspring. If he had had children, we would all have faith for nothing -- in vain.
