I met a friend out for dinner last night that I haven't seen in a while (we're both females, in our 20's). When she got to the restaurants she told me that the table was under a different name than hers was. I didn't ask, but why would you use an alias? She's not famous, etc. so why?

I do it for fun. I don't tell my guests or my husband. We arrive and I say "table for (whatever)" - they find it quite funny.

Of course without a little more detail, we can only make guesses. My friends has a very long difficult to spell and pronounce last name...he just uses the name Brooks to simplify the process. I, on the other hand, have a short last name but it is difficult to understand on the phone and my first name is odd and spelled strangely, so I use the first name of one of my children to simplify the process.

I'm curious as to why you didn't just ask her???

Hmmmm...could be she is trying to keep her husband/lover from knowing where she was?
I lived with an abusive husband for 15 years, and used to do the same thing...I did not want him to be able to know where I was...(he would accuse me of all kinds of terrible things...that I DID NOT do)....I have a very unique maiden name, and it would stand out if I didn't use something else...
Maybe she has other motives...I don't know...maybe you should just ask her...

If its a pain to pronounce, she could use a different name.

If someone is following her around or wanting to do something mean to her, she could use an alias.

It could also be fun.

Is her name difficult to spell or pronounce? Maybe it's easier to use a more generic name for reservations, especially if it's an ethnic restauant and the original name is even more unfamiliar due to language barriers.

For privacy reasons, or perhaps someone else made the reservations and decided not to go. Maybe they told her she could have theor reserved table. Who knows.

Because she used her name the last time she was in there.. Once she was kicked out for kicking another client, she figured in order to get in she would need to use a different name.

Oh she probably just did it for fun. Where I used to work sometimes we would use different names just to sort of spice things up and entertain ourselves. So that's most likely why she did it.

I do it for fun sometimes. It's just a name so that you recognise it. You could say Scooby Doo for all it matters. I tend to use Harry Potter character names.

Several possible reasons....
Covering her tracks, if someone is checking up on her.
Getting better treatment (Add Dr. to your name and you see to get better tables and better service).
