** Is the Hell punishment administered for rehabilitation, revenge, separation from society or deterrant?**

If hell is administered as punishment for rehabilitative purposes, that says souls can be redeemed from hell and supposedly go to Heaven before eternity is over.

Revenge in and of itself is unacceptable because
infinite revenge for finite sins are really irreconcilable
with a merciful God.

Separation from society is a non starter because of this:

The Bible Ecclesiastes 9 : 4 - 6
Anyone who is among the living has hope
even a live dog is better off than a dead lion!
For the living know that they will die,
but the dead know nothing;they have no further reward,
and even the memory of them is forgotten.
Their love, their hate and their jealousy have long
since vanished; never again will they have a part
in anything that happens under the sun.

Punishment did not deter Satan and it does not deter
folks from doing as they please. Witness the sad recent school events. Be good for goodness sake and not in anticipation of some reward or punishment.

Have a pleasant day.

Out of the four you mention I would go for deterrant, however it isn`t just there for this reason only,Hell is eternal separation from God and this is our own choice while on earth,I know that some on here damn others to Hell everyday but this is bad theology and certainly not logical at all.

deterrant so to speak. It's a countermeasure for those who want to question the religion. The end all answer to those who wish to seek answers that the religion cannot offer.

It's the "contract" by which members are forced to continue their praise and worship to avoid the consequences. It's a form of control.... complete with the illusion of choice.

It's not punishment, it's a choice.

Lady or the Tiger, except in this case both doors are open and you know exactly what is behind each door.

edit - as Rush sings, if you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice. Free will stops on Judgement Day.

None of the above. Hell is the absence of God and you can only go to Hell if you personally totally and absolutly reject God.

You CAN, however, suffer a lot of hellish cause and effect in this world if you chose to be a horsesass to other people.

I think it's used for all of the above. I think we all need to start working harder on fixing our problems though. This world we live in is becoming hell. Yeah I know there are some great things in our world, but dam, it's getting pretty scary.

None of the above; It is death; no more existence. Not a burning fire; not alive to burn. Thats what I think the bible teaches. Obviously that is not so cruel since many people dont want eternal life. The opposite is eternal death. Sounds like a good plan to me.

I know they try to make it a deterrant, but it just doesn't work. Anyway if it were true, it would be for revenge.

Great question!

One could say prison is a choice, too... I'm guessing it's a "deterrent."

Hell is seperation from God. God can not be around sin. Since its your choicee to sin, then its your choice to be seperated from God and to be in Hell.
