I've been told what is a good way to start a speech: With a narrative hook, or to start gradually. So after all these possibilities on good ways to start a speech, what's the opposite?

With a lame joke, poorly told.

With a common introduction -- yours should be original.

Also, 1/2 drunk would also be a bad way to start a speech. Sorry, just had to ☺

Starting with Uhhhh, or Ummmm. Cleearing your throat.

I'm going to keep this short ................

Everyone will groan knowing that you have no intention of doing so otherwise you wouldn't have wasted time saying that!
