One more point, if you are responsible enough to join the military at 18 and fire a gun at terrorists, shouldn't you be allowed to drink a beer???

My husband's parents would not sign for him to get his license at 16 even though he had a part time job since he wasn't showing his parents that he was mature enough to handle the responsibility of that privilage. He said that it was the best decision his parents ever made. Most 16 years olds have the mentality that the Drivers License is a right and not a privilage. I, on the other hand, was able to convince the court of law that I was mature enough to get a restricted license at the age of 15. My parents requirement was that I maintained a 3.0 in school and had an extra cirricular activity. My brothers on the other hand got their license at 16 and were handed the keys to the car and said "Have fun"! I was the only one in our family to graduate high school on time, pursue college, and have a steady job. I think that responsibility goes beyond just being able to maintain a job. The parents are still responsible for the child. If the parents are afraid of the child driving, and lawsuits, then maybe they have the right idea. Each parent knows each childs mentality and maturity and that is why the government has given them the authority to allow kids to get their license.

Your question asks about two different things, the responsibility of work and the rsponsibility of driving. Most 16 year olds are mature enough to do both, work and get a driver's license. The two, however are not dependant upon each other. There are adults that are certainly resp[onsible enough to hold a job and arrive on time, etc. that are not necessarilly responsible enough to drive a car. It is important to both learn behind the wheel skills and to drive defensively, both skills that are not needed for many job tasks. Licesing authorities can only test for knowledge of traffic laws and certain driving skills. They cannot guarantee that licensed drivers will always be cautious or drive sensibly. On most jobs, there is a supervisor that can make certain that the work is being done to a standard. In an car, there will not always be such supervision.

I think so, but that is my opinion...now keep in mind it does depend on the responsibility level of the child also...
Because let's face it you do not want your child behind the wheel of a 1-2 ton piece of steel if they are not responsible because that is a death wish....no parent wants that for their kids...
I think if they make a C or better, attend school and have a job then chances are in most cases they are responsible enough to handle it....
I would suggest good driver training and not let more that one teen in the car with them at any one time...that reduces accidents significantly...it is proven the more kids in the car the higher the accident ratio is...to many conversations to distract the driver...
plus they should be drug tested in my opinion if they are under 18.
So there you have it ...my 2cents...:)

How many jobs put you in control of a ton of metal that can go over 100mph? Since younger drivers are involved in a disproportionately high number of fatal RTAs, lowering the age at which you are allowed to drive unsupervised would appear to be the stupidest thing you could possibly do.

I think it depends on the person. Some 16 year olds would be fully capable of handling a job and driving, but others would be too stressed from school+the added workload or would end up partying too much.

In most states you can get it at 16, in fact in several you can start at 15. Why not debate something real?
