to illustrate this if you set two independent tires on the ground and make them fallow the same turning arch, you wont get and inner and outer ring pattern in the mud but instead will have something more akin to an Olympic ring or a master card symbol

because the two tires are trying to drive at different angles and different speeds but the body they are attached to isn't
the outside tire is traveling a wider angle and the inner tire is traveling a tighter angle by setting the proper toe out, you align the out side tire with its wider angle and the inner tire with its tighter angle,
