i live in an apartment complex in puertorico that has side by side balconys, my neighbor smokes ,with her hand sticking out of the railing and all the smokes comes inside my apartment .it fills up with cigarette smoke.im constantly closeing all of my windows and door so that the smoke doesnt come in but i still does.i dont think its fair that i should lock myself up everytime she wants to smoke.it gets pretty hot out here .its starting to bother my kids , its also bad for us.she also has to small chidren .but i dont think she cares as long as the smoke doesnt go into her house ,but it comes into mine how convineant.im just about fed up with the situation i already spoke to her once ,about a year ago she said that she was unaware that the smoke was going into my apt.she stopped cause she got pregnant, but now she gave birth and now shes doing ti again.what should i do?

Next time it happens, go out on your balcony and tell her how you feel. There is nothing wrong with it. If you don't smoke, there is no reason for your house to smell like you do. Tell her look, all your smoke comes into my house. I'm not trying to tell you what to do but I'd appreciate it if you would go outside to smoke or smoke somewhere else. If she doesn't listen or gives you a fight. Contact the people in charge of the complex and let them tell her. Try to be nice but if that doesn't work, do what you have to.

Just tell her that the smoke bothers you and puts your kids at risk and ask her to please do so maybe down in the court yard or outside of the building not on the balcony and if it persists you will for the sake of your health and your children's health have to complain to the management and if that don't work find another apartment. A real friend who do all they can to keep a friendship and if she values your friendship she will find other avenues.

Try to mention it is a conversation and being nice about it. Alot of smokers are feed up with the fact that their homes are one of the only place that they can smoke now without getting a fine or something like that. I am not sure what the laws are their but the laws here are pretty strick about it. You have to understand that she too pays her rent and that if you have talked to her about it before and she quit that she will do the same again. Try to be understanding that she might actually not know that it is bothering you.

Personally I wouldn't confront the neightbor, but perhaps go to the landlord and explain the situation to them.
If you try to confront the neighbor it could cause big problems, but the landlord can say that it is bothering several people and not give names, then she won't know it's you that complained.
Good Luck!

That is the rudest, most disgusting thing ever. Smokers can be so selfish. Definately confront her next time she's out there, and point to the smoke coming into your house so that she can see for herself. If that doesn't stop her, complain to the building manager.

Well, I would remind her that the smoke does come in your apartment and ask if maybe she could smoke just outside her own front door. Be polite about it. Smoking is not a crime, after all, and she is taking pains to protect her children so she is obviously aware of the dangers.

Ask her if she could move her smoke away from your doors. She is probably unaware that it's doing that since it's kinda hard to see smoke in the light.

Just mention it casually during small talk and ask if she could maybe smoke on the other side of the balcony.

you should talk to her but honestly its probably not gonna do any good, the only reason she quit last time was because she was pregnant. I'm a smoker and i smoke outside my house (in the dead of winter in Michigan also!!) but if someone told me my smoke was blowing in their house and asked me not to smoke I would most likely tell them to eff off!!

Buy a big fan and set it up at the side of your balcony. :) Blow all the smoke right back at her!
