Because nationalism is the opposite of colonialism. Nationalism means
Devotion to the interests or culture of ones nation.
The belief that nations will benefit from acting independently rather than collectively, emphasizing national rather than international goals.
Aspirations for national independence in a country under foreign domination.
Colonialism means:Control by one power over a dependent area or people. The purposes of colonialism include economic exploitation of the colony's natural resources, creation of new markets for the colonizer, and extension of the colonizer's way of life beyond its national borders.

So, the conclusion is the people in the colonized country want freedom and are nationalists.
Got it?

Simple really, the more people are persecuted, the more they will stick together. If they feel they are being unfairly taxed, as a group, then they are going to stick together. If they feel they are being put upon to take care of troops, they are being attacked by Indians and they are aren't being defended properly, if their goods are not traded on the same equal level as goods from Britain, then they are going to feel they are being lumped together as being different and they will then seek to uphold each other, and therein you have the growth of nationalism.
