Are there any other reasons for having a gun, other than killing helpless animals which makes some cowards feel powerful?

Oh gee maybe us lawabiding citizens want to be able to protect ourselves! If you don't want a gun then don't get one but for the rest of us stay out of our business.

The obvious reason is the 2nd Amendment... to prevent tyranny.

I have several weapons, and have TWICE stopped a burglar by the simple act of chambering a round in my shot-gun. If I'd left it to the police... it would have been 30-45 minutes before they could have responded. AND I'm not confronting a burglar with only a bat... HE might have a gun !!

Our Aparment complex hasn't had a SINGLE burglary since the last burglar was caught... and my rural home and brother's ranch don't have ANY crime because everyone is LEGALLY armed.

We don't kill helpless animals... we harvest 2 wild-turkeys and one deer each year in accordance with the laws of the State of California.

ALL our weapons are IAW CA State laws.

Actually there are several good reasons to own a gun. First it is an Americans right to own one (provided they haven't committed any felonies) to defend their home and family. Secondly, farmers and herders usually have guns to protect their livestock from predators. And thirdly, with regards to killing helpless animals, you have to remember that us humans have driven off most of the natural predators causing an imbalance in the predator-prey relationship. If an animal is hunted for food, and it is killed in a way to minimize the suffering, and it is not wasted, then I don't have a problem over this as opposed to animals that spend their entire lives cooped up in small boxes with no quality of life. If you want to defend helpless animals, I suggest you take a look at the food industry and their treatment of animals, at least the deer that is hunted in the woods has had a life. Blessed Be )O(

If you are ever put in the situation for needing one, you will understand. Wait until your house is broken into, your family threatened, and then try and "talk down" the criminal. You would never be the person with a CHL and a .40cal that stopped a mass murderer in a restaurant or school. It would have taken one gun to save 30 lives in VT.

I don't even want to start on the "killing helpless animals" - you PETA freaks are impossible.

A gun is one of those things you would rather have and not need it than need and now have it.

OK, say you are living in a high crime area, drive by shootings, B&E, gangs killing just because they are wearing the 'wrong' color. or you can't walk down the street without getting mugged. Would you rather let it happen to you or would you rather be protected. I would choose the latter. i don't like guns, but I would never condemn someone from having one legally. It is our right you know. Another thing, haven't you heard of all the mountain lions out mid west that attack people for no reason? I love animals as much as anyone else, but I wouldn't stand by and let any of my family or friends be attacked by any animal. I would do anything to protect them from that. These attacks by animals don't make them 'poor defensless animals'. It makes them blood thirsty once they taste maybe, your blood? Think about it.

Regardless of the REASONS for having a gun, and there are more than your short list, citizens of the USA have a RIGHT to have one. The guns do not do the killing. People do. POLITICAL CORRECTNESS is either a direct or indirect contributor to most mass murders and the facts of the Va Tech killings are verifying that it is no exception.

Other than the great answers I've already seen here... how about practice! You've obviously never served your country so let me tell you this... range time in the military is few and far between. So I practice on my own with my own weapons and ammo. Next time some classmate walks into your school with a weapon and starts killing people... think of me right before you get lead poisoning... I could have been there to save your life!

Perhaps "Gee, why can't we all just get along" should be your moto... not everyone on this planet is "nice", and we deserve the right to defend ourselves!

Practicing a skill by being able to shoot a paper target at 100 meters more accurately and precisely than anyone else in the world?

Knowing that, when the chips are down, you could provide food for your family in time of need?

Knowing that, when threatened, you could defend yourself and your loved ones from threats by criminals/ thugs/ murderers/ invaders?

So tell me, if some big guy twice your size covered in blood with a deranged look on his face popped out of a dark alley and charged you with a big freakin' knife, what would your response be? Stand there and fight him (brave, but possibly foolhardy)? Run away (smart but cowardly)?

You talk real big, but have no idea of what you are saying. So STFU.

Ive looked at alot of these other anwser and agree with alot of them . We hunt because we enjoy it and we eat what we kill. We also have them to protect ourselfs and family. But you have the right to feel the way you do. And you have that right because of people who do have guns to protect you. And having a gun doesnt make you feel powerful it makes you feel safe.

Possibly -- the defense of your family and yourself against armed intruders or ones that are armed and intend harm ??

Go, and live in any inner city in America for two weeks-- then repost this question -- braveheart !! Or, live in the wilds of Texas with the occasion of rabid coyotes and rattlesnakes then come back and talk of "false courage" !!

With a little more life experience -- you'll speak a little gentler of things you know nothing about !!!

Here is a simple reason for you.
Imagine the skill level of our police and military if no dads were allowed to teach their children how to use a firearm safely.

Sure hope you enjoyed your lettuce sandwich for lunch. Mine had duck breast in it.
