Around the 4 week mark they will show an interest in mum's food. Put out bowls of watered down kitten food for the kittens. They will watch mum and learn from her. They will still suckle, but mum will start to wean them.

Are you feeding the mum kitten food? It is a good idea as it has all the extra nutrients needed for the mum so she doesn't stress with the feeding. And also the kittens will get the taste of the food best suited to them.

They should be weaned by 6 weeks and eating baby kitten dry food. By this time the food should be served dry so the kittens will earn to chew and crunch up their food.

By 8 weeks they are old enough to be re-homed ( also desexed so long as they are up to correct weight).

My kittens couldn't eat any food until they were 7 weeks old. They started getting interested in their mom's food at about 6 weeks and would try to eat it and choke. The vet told me they should start at 6-8 weeks. All they eat is the dry kitten food and water now. They are 13 weeks old.

The kittens start to wean at four weeks, give them bits of chicken and pieces of wild rabbit (both meats with the bone left in) if you can find a game meat supplier wild rabbit is best, kittens need to learn to chew the kinds of foods that will keep their teeth good.
There are commercial kitten foods that have the kinds of things that butchers meat doesn't, tin food should only be a part of the animal's diet though. They should get good quality low fat teath/dental care biscuits, raw meat with the bones in and a small amount of tinned food as atreat or suppliament by the time they are twelve weeks old.

Cheers, Shona

They can start as early as 5 weeks, but will need a little longer to go all the way to kitten food.

the kittens should start to show an interest in food at about 5 weeks. you might find them trying to eat mums food before this but im sure its about 5 weeks. mum will feed them for as long as they need it and show them the food when its the right time.

i usually put food and water down in the area where they are and the mum will decide when shes ready for them to wean, can vary between 2 and 5 weeks, the longer they are suckling the better, oh my friend didnt think to put food down and her cat went out and caught a bird and brought it to the kittens to start weaning them, so be careful look out for them birds lol xxxx

When they start getting teeth, the mother will no longer let them drink her milk, they will get weaned off the mother's milk and will want to eat soft food.
