I was on the web researching on my fathers' family background (he passed away when I was very young) and I came across myself as one of his relatives. There was my name listed and directly below said "associated name" and the name of someone else from a different state. I tired to put it all together and it looks like someone used my SSN with his own name and address. I don't know this person and I've never lived anywhere else. I checked my credit report and the only thing odd was that in the year 2000, there was an account opened but closed that same day... It doesn't seem like this person has tired to use my SSN for the past 6-some years... should I still report this ?

I would report it big time. I would not let this go any longer. You are lucky this person hasn't done more damage yet. They might be saving you ssn for something really big. Call your SSC office and get the ball rolling. Good luck and I am glad to hear they havn't managed any more damage yet.

It appears that it was an honest mistake and someone either gave the wrong SSN or the store keyed it in wrong. Just to be on the safe side, however, I would bring it to the attention of the Social Security Administration. If it was an honest mistake as it appears there will be no problems for anyone. If there is some chicanery going on they will be the ones to deal with it.

www.fbi.gov has a link for suspected fraud victims.

You could contact a credit report company and find out how to get a copy of your credit report, going back that far. If you suspect you are/were a victim of fraud, you have certain rights to that report.

Not everything on the internet is accurate so be careful if that is your only source for reporting fraud. It is one place to start but should never be your only foundation. Someone else probably does have the same name as yours, so the internet caught it as "associated name". Go through only reputable channels...

Good luck...

YES you should report it. There is soo much identity theft these days you can't be too careful. Report it, they can flag your account and notify you immediately if someone is trying to open a new account. Best of Luck...

yes, report it and you should change your SSN!
Notify the IRS immediately because that will change the amount of money that you earn for the IRS, could cause fees and even jail time. Report it and change your SSN.
