I have a boiler that runs my hot water and central heating. Do I need to have my emersion heater on all the time (it just has an on off switch in the cupboard) as my HW only comes from the boiler twice a day on my current setting.
Also, I have the thermostat on my storage tank set at 45 deg. Does this only control the emersion temp. And does this mean that if I have the emersion heater on all the time, it will just regulate the temperature to 45 deg regardless of the new hotwater coming in twice a day from the boiler.

No you don't need youe immersion heater on when the boiler is on.
The thermostat controls the temperature of the water in the tank, no matter how it is produced.
From what you say my advice would be switch off the immersion completely.

Why have you still got the emersion heater if you can get hot water through the boiler system you have got? What energy and money must you be wasting having both. The idea of the timer thing on the boiler is to set it so that you have the hot water when you are there and need it. No good warming water in the daytime if you are out all day. Best to warm it for use when you need it. Better still, get the immersion heater removed, and replace the conventional boiler with a condenser boiler. Instant hot water at the turn of the tap, without storage, and heat the rooms to the temp you need them to be with thermostats on the rads. Result? Cheaper bills and a reduction in waste. ( Not to mention the good deal for the environment).

The strap on cylinder thermostat only controls the water temperature in the cylinder produced from the boiler. The immersion heater has it's own thermostat under the terminal cover. I would regard the immersion heater as a back up, and let the boiler heat the water. Change the times on the programmer or set to 'All Day' or use the 'Boost' if you are running out of water.

No you would only need the emersion heater if the boiler breaks down...it is a good back up system if your boiler breaks down..

specific - yet you're able to be able to desire to confirm that the timer has change contacts able to dealing with the load. Its fairly achievable which you will could desire to apply a 2 point gadget - that's a timer that operates a relay and the heavy accountability relay switches on the immersion heater. on the grounds that its blending electrical energy and water, i could advise getting a expert to do it for protection.
