It depends on what you look for in a book. If you are expecting a good and classic epic literary work a la Tolkien, then you might need to shift your gear down a couple of transmissions before reading Eragon, if you get what I mean. I've read some books from the fantasy genre, and I found Eragon not quite up to par. Maybe you might want to try Naomi Novik's Temeraire series instead. They're about dragons too.
I found Eragon and the sequel, Eldest, to be somewhat derivative, and borrowed too much elements from the LOTR series; the backwater-boy background, the journey over leagues of barren lands and forests alike, the human-elf-dwarf connection.... all very Tolkien-esque with a touch of McCaffrey. Some critics even put Star Wars into the equation, but I haven't started reading sci-fi, so I wouldn't know.
Nevertheless, Eragon is quite a good story in itself. Not great, mind you. But good. And not as tiresome as Terry Brooks' Sword of Shannara.
I think it's the human-dragon relationship and the significance of that unique bonding that did the trick for the Inheritance fans. I found that aspect of the book pretty cool. It's something that the movie hadn't been able to capture. And that was reason enough for me to decide to pick up the sequel Eldest, after all.
Don't buy it if you want to compare it to LOTR. But if you can be objective enough to look past the trips and stumbles in Paolini's debut and often depth-lacking writing, and just enjoy the story, then by all means, go ahead and buy it. You know, just for entertainment purposes?
Or if you don't want to spend on something you might regret, then just pop in a local library and borrow the book.
Good luck and happy reading!

Free e-books are illegal, so if you really want to read it you should think about checking it out of the library because I really don't think it's worth the money. The entire series reads mostly like Star Wars with dragons. There's not much originality at all and the writing is only sub-par. I know Paolini was young when he wrote it, but that inexperience shows through in the writing. It's alright for younger kids, but if you've read much else in the genre or are reading adult books, then you'll probably be frustrated with the basic sentence structure and predictable, borrowed plot. The fact is, if this book had been written by an adult, it wouldn't have been published. Because Paolini was so young, the publishers knew they could market him more than the book. Paolini got the publicity and made the rounds on talk and news shows, and Eragon became a success not by its own merits but because the author is interesting.

First of all, "free e-books" are illegal for books that are still under copyright protection.
I would suggest checking the first book out of your local public library and deciding for yourself what you think of it. There are people that love the series and people that don't, and not knowing your taste in books it is hard to give you a good answer.
Personally, I think they are an entertaining series so far, but the story is really derivative. It was pretty distracting to me to have such overdone plot devices.

The Book? YES!!! even though a lot of critics find say Christopher Paolini took multiple ideas from other famous books, like Lord of the Rings... I think that they are totally unique, and the similarities are coincidences. So yes... I'll say they are defiantly worth getting!
the movie? never... it was awful.

i l;iked the stories.. the plots themselves.. but as other answerers have stated it copies a lot. not that i blame paolini for copying ideas. i would have to myself. i would most definitely not suggest reading it if you're going to compare it to LOTR or the Pern books. i've read both and i own the first and second of the inheritance trilogy and when i compare them i most definitely enjoy LOTR and Pern better. even Terry Brooks' Sword of Shannara was good. still waiting for mom to do something about the rest of them.. we only have the first 2.. lol
