its good for old people to stay active for lots of reasons
1) to keep their joints moving and help prevent stiffness
2) to keep their bowel movements regular as sitting all the time will make them constipated
3) to help prevent pressure sores developing as old peoples skin tends to become thinner and bones weaker
4) to keep their independance and not have to rely on others

as for making friends, it really is the same as for anybody. everyone needs friends to talk to. old people like to reminese about the past or talk about their familys so having a friend to talk to is great for old people
hope this helps

Staying active feeds the soul. When us 'old' people stop socializing we tend to give up on life - especially if one's family is not around to visit. THAT my dear is why Bingo is so popular with the older crowd - the brain is active - granny's socialize - it gives one a reason to get out of bed. Staying active stimulates the brain.

Moving around helps the blood flow and the bones from seizing up. Making new friends would keep the mind stimulated. Happiness that comes from knowing you have friends who care can do alot for ones mental well being.

If you are asking how to research the subject... search "elderly" and "geriatric health"; look for sites about "centenarians". The answers before mine seemed right on the mark but I suspect that this is something you should research in order to thoroughly understand.

Er.... same as for young people. Know the term coach-potato? And you know why it is bad? Same for old people.

If you don't do anything you wither away.
