You know that the faster you travel, the slower time goes by for you, right?

Gravity is a constant acceleration towards a point. (imagine being inside a spaceship, you're floating, and you turn the engines on. The effect on you is the same as gravity.) Gravity is an acceleration.

Since you're accelerating without moving ( on a planet or star or inside a galaxy), there has to be a counter effect. And that counter effect is more space is created. So 2 massive objects(galaxies) will move away from eachother because their very existence is creating more space.

Plus the space in between is huge, so time goes by faster, which multiplies the space even more.

You're not going to like the answer..! The specific physical force causing the universe to expand is >>not<< precisely known. Certainly we can't say it's due to left over energy from the Big Bang 'explosion' because that event was not just a simple explosion.

A feature known as 'zero point energy' does exist down at spatial scales below about 1.6 x 10 minus 35 meters. ZPE is literally the energy of the vacuum of space and could be what drives the expansion.

To muddy up the picture even more we've recently found that the expansion rate of the universe is accelerating, not slowing down as might be expected.

Hang around for awhile and the mystery might be solved : )

Its the bing bang which is causing the expansion of the universe and the galaxies are moving apart form each other. There is not enough gravity to hold all the galaxies constantly. How ever there is one more theory which talks about anti gravity. Which is exactly opposite to the normal gravity and pushes all the things apart...

The big bang just may still be ongoing, but i believe it has stopped and the universe is in a state of decline.
The apparent expansion [The red shift ] is a misinterpretation of what is observed.
The neutron star activity that drives the galactic center is responsible for the actual red shift, not the apparent recession.

Who said the big bang is over? The bang is still in progress and that is the precise reason why we are still moving away.

the big bang explosion itself caused the matter to move away from each other.in coarse of time as the universe cooled they combined and formed celestial bodies.
