It is a comic book brought to the big screen... how does that make it a lie?
Yes, it is loosely based on a story from the past... very loosely.. but the movie is based on the comic book (graphic novel, same difference) not on the history. The writer said so himself.
Therefore, not a lie...
although I hated how much it deviated from the stories that I remember about the Spartans and the Persians, I still thought it was a well done rendition of the graphic novel.

I was under the impression that "300" was not billed as a historical film so that means, though based on some fact, the director felt free to do whatever he wanted. Which is what he did to make it a dramatic movie, so yes it's not entirely true, yes a lot was made up/left out, it's a movie!!!!!!

~Sorry, I get my history from books and reliable sources - original sources when possible. I generally assume movies are for entertainment and not intended to be believed, particularly when they are identified as fiction. Then again, I grew up in a place and time when people took pride in education and strived to learn and worked at doing it. I acknowledge I am of a vanishing breed, but come on, really - did you honestly expect historical truth in an action flick produced to sell tickets and popcorn? Have things really gotten that bad? On the other hand, the 300 Hoplites under Leonidas did kick Xerxes butt at Thermopylae for long enough that Athens was able to outfit its navy and send it to Salamis to wipe out the Persian fleet, paving the way for Athens, Sparta, Corinth, Megara, Thebes, Thespiae and others of the pan-Greeks to finish the job at Plataea.
Its not really surprising the Spartans did so well, given the terrain and geography of their chosen battleground combined with the superior armament and armor of the Hoplites as compared to their Persian foes. It must have been something akin to 183 Texicans holding off 6000 of Santa Anna's best troops at the Alamo, or is that a bogus myth as well?

The movie was good but the facts were false. Therfore, i agree with you. But i still cant figure-out how come the movie is a huge blockbuster, i mean the movie is not great its just ok.
300 war with the persians was a total fantasy and it doesnt explain the real events which occured, i mean who could explain??it happened thousands of years ago, even though if there is a written history we must agree tht it is written by human, and human makes stories to spice up legend.

I have not seen the movie '300', but I have read Herodotus and Zenophon. I think this question should be posted in the Entertainment & Music - subsection Movies category.

Well, there were a lot of historical inaccuracies. For example, it was Leonids' predecessor, Cleomenes who threw the Persian ambassador down the well. And no Greek would have said "tonight we done in hell", since hell is very much a Christian belief - he would have referred to either hades or the the underworld, but not hell. But these are all things done in the interests of telling a story - it's a film based on history, not an attempt to tell history as it was.

Not at all. You are right to assert that Hollywood does gloss things over. The studios tend to exaggerate things a bit. But as for the central story of 300, it's in History books. Whether it really happened or not is another matter. History as we know it is not 100% accurate.
