People do private studies on these type of spree killings. The problem is figuring out what makes them explode. There were many people concerned about Cho at VT. There were many people who took actions to get help but the problem was that no one had clear proof he was a threat to himself or others except the people in the hospital who could only keep him for 72 hours. There are all kinds of people who exhibit the same signs as Cho did but do not commit mass murder. The question is, how do we determine who is a threat and how do we stop them? It appears a lot of people took steps to get this guy help but the system failed. How do we fix the system?

They DO study this in law enforcement. Watch the coverage on TV and you will see that many of the experts that come out of law enforcement are much more on the money with their descriptions of these sick killers than the psychologists, psychiatrists, or other reporters. NBC's Van Sant, a former FBI profiler, is particularly insightful.

The problem in this Virginia Tech case is that the campus police were extremely negligent when they acted on one assumption only -- that the killer had left campus. And, their failure to call in the state police until two hours after the dorm murders is absolutely unjustifiable.

Intelligence and Investigation section of the law enforcement agencies should have a study of the spree killings. Every unit must be able to react immediately to this kind of action in order to prevent the occurrence of similar incidents.
