There have been guns around for a long time yet no school shootings.. Why all of a sudden since the 90s have people been doing this? What caused it?

I'm sure it's happened before the '90s, but a big reason why it has proliferated is because of the "copycat" effect. If they didn't receive so much attention they would happen so often.

I'm a Christian and a creationist, but I don't really think you're onto anything. the scopes trial was 1926. The possession of small guns that can be smuggled into a school has also skyrocketed. Automatic pistols, which are used in many, many school shootings, weren't made popular till the German army used them in 1908. Also, students weren't forced to go to school till only 60 years before the Scopes trial, so school shootings has risen with the number of people in school. Maybe evolution has led to an increase in violence. Maybe people do things to others if they think there's no one watching them. But school shootings is probably the wrong example.

I have two equally solid guesses:
An internal instinct for population control. There's a species of animal in which a great percentage jump off a cliff to their own deaths when faced with population control. That's either an inherent natural instinct, or incredible humility and forethought on behalf of the animals, I think the former.
The Electromagnetic spectrum. We have microwaves, radio waves, and infrared all around us. Our cell phones emit nearly the same frequency of wave that cooks your foot in a microwave oven; imagine what they're probably doing to your head. Also, gamma waves, those on the highest frequency and lowest wave height is virtually unblockable. It can actually damage DNA irreparably, causing problems not only in you, but also any future offspring you bear. These are all the same kinds of waves, and we are assaulted by them daily, thanks to cell phones, ceiling fans, television sets, wireless phones, notebooks etc. Satellites are beaming plenty more of these waves at us. What's more, we also have increased steroids and pesticides in all of our food, the chemistry of which could be responsible for a gradual shift to insanity. It could be a combination of all of this and desensitization due to violent movies and video games. One thing is for sure, though, it's not because we're less tolerant.

Good Question. Sociologists need to look deep for the answers and come up with solutions however harsh they may be and curbing the freedom of some.
