Ist date is always exciting. You will always want to show your best. This will often make you tongue tight. To avoid tense moment, it's best to choose a restaurant that has comfortable atmosphere with good view of the surroundings; has good food & a live band that presents beautiful songs & music.
The surrounding views will give you ready topics to chat endlessly. The good food & beautiful songs & music will hide your tension.
In Singapore, I will recommend Top of the M at the Meritus Mandarin Hotel along Orchard Road. The 360 degree turning restaurant will give you a panaromic view of Singapore. There will be a live bank going round the entire restaurant after 8.00 pm. The food & service are super in this restaurant.
If you are looking for a more economical restaurant, Altino at Jewel Box will be your best selection for your first date. The atmosphere is more casual and you can move your body along with the live band freely during their performance. You can even pre-arrange with the restaurant staff to go to the stage to perform & impress your date if you have the talent. Great variety of cuisine including local food to satisfy your taste bud.
Have a beautiful date. Good luck to you!

Perhaps find some place that is unique, with a somewhat casual atmosphere. If possible, try to locate a restaurant next to a body of water, call for a reservation in order to get a table with a good view.

Hibachi's restaurant because they cook the food right at your table. The cooks have a great sense of showmanship and humor. They tell jokes and play around with the guests. It keeps the atmosphere light and relaxing which is a good way to start everything.

The first date is really a friendly thing. You are not likely to take them to something too romantic (unless you are a super smooth dude, planning on getting lucky on the first night, but for this advice you need to talk to someone else).
I tend to take girls to cafes or other relaxed type environment. Too formal and they might feel uncomfortable about being themselves. So cafes, or outdoor bistros are usually good. Cafes that you know also reflect your personality.
Cafe districts often have lots of late night shops you can walk around looking at to keep the date going. Places by the beach are good for this too.
Don't go to somewhere too adventurous, because that can be a little bit off putting. Maybe she is a lovely girl, and likes you, but having to eat something like BBQ cows rectum might put her off.

i say go to somewhere familiar and casual. like applebees or olive garden. the atmosphere is relaxed. you don't want to treat someone to a really fancy place and make them uncomfortable and if there's a second date, how are you supposed to top a really fancy restaurant??

Mongolian BBQ
It's a nice stir fry place when you get to make your own "bowl" of fresh uncooked meats, veggies and sauces. Then you get to watch them cook it in front of you. Everyone I have taken said they liked it a lot.
