Why is it that, if you have bad eye sight, squinting your eyes makes things come more in focus?

It does not have anything to do with the shape of the eye. It is due to the decreased focal area you are looking thru when you squint. With you eyes wide open you are looking at a larger picture. When you squint, you are basically narrowing the picture to a finer point.

Well, I can think of at least 2 reasons.

If you have astigmatism, which causes the light to enter your eyes on multiple planes, then blocking all but the horizontal plane will reduce the blurryness. You can also try looking through 2 fingers that are nearly touching, adjusting the distance between the fingers and the rotation angle (axis) until you get the clearest image.

If you have near-sightedness, pushing in on the front of the eye makes the eye a fraction shorter. Nearsightedness is caused by too long of an eyeball. The further out the lens, the more magnification you get, making it easier to see up close and harder to see far out. So by shortening the front of the eye, you are making it easier to see further out. (You can also use your fingers to lightly push in on your eyelids and notice a difference.) I wonder if the eye doctors here have taken the time to experiment like this, or if they simply rely on their books.

If you are far-sighted (need glasses to read up close), then any squinting that lengthens the eye will help you see what is closer to you.

How come you are observing how others pray? Don't you say your prayers? Or do you pray with one eye shut and one eye open so you can observe the others? Wouldn't that distract from your concentrating on saying your prayers? Why don't you try that and find out for yourself? I pray in private, I don't see others pray so I can't answer your question for you, but I sure would be interested in your observations though :)Did you think to go ask any of them if their prayers got answered? You might try that the next time you see them squinting so hard :)

Good question. I always squint when I need to see something clearer.

But ..... did you know that ..........

When you are watching television and the interviewer is talking to someone who doesn't really want to be seen ... eg their faces have different coloured hazy pale squares on their face (so they can't be recognised), if you squint you can see their face perfectly.

But you can't see their face if the television studio has put a hazy cloud on their face.

I have an eye appointment with the Specialist tomorrow morning ... so I'll ask him.

i dont really have a precise scientific answer. but when you squint your eyes, or even pull them back chinese style, it bends your lenses, or retinas, and you're able to see better.

It changes your eye shape temporarily, allowing for better focus.

As the previous people stated, it has to do with the anatomy of the eye...
