First, I'd like to thank those of you who tried assisting me in what I thought was tail rot with my male Betta, Sir Gilbert Finnegan.

I have now come to the conclusion that my beloved Betta has columnaris, or cotton mouth as it is more widely known.

I'd love it if any of you fellow fish lovers could help me determine which treatment option is most effective since I am a first time Betta mommy.

I have on hand the following medications: Tetracycline medicated fish eat, Jungle's Fungus Eliminator, Triple Sulfa capsules,Tetracycline capsuls and Splendid Betta's BettaFix.

Due to Gilly's recent loss in appetite (normally he'd eat 4 Hikari Betta Bio Gold pellets, for the last week he's only been eating 2) I think the Tetracycline medicated fish eat wouldn't be the right choice.

Could someone tell me which of my medications will give the best results? Or maybe recommend a better, and tried and trusted treatment?

I really want my Betta to pull through this so any help is appreciated. TIA!

**Note**

The reason I feel it is columnaris is because along with the deteriorating anal fin he appears to have a couple of thread looking particles around his mouth.

Thanks again to anyone who tries to help. God bless!

Columnaris does not respond well to several of the typical antibiotics available on the market. To date, the most effective antibiotic for the treatment of Columnaris is Furanace (generic name Nifurpirinol). it is the only antibiotic that has been proven effective against internal columnaris. If you want a recommendation based on what you currently have available I would most suggest the Tetracycline. It is reasonably well absorbed by fish and is effective against external columnaris. Triple sulfa has it's uses certainly, but columnaris isn't one of them. Any amount of the medicated fish food that he will eat would also be beneficial assuming it's the medicated food for bacterial infections and not the one for parasites.

Hope that helps

NEVER remove a fish's disease by hands. It will only cause more problems and come back quickly. I would be more worried about treating the cotton mouth rather than feeding him because bettas can go a week without food. Treat his quarantine tank with melafix, pimafix, or bettamax. Raising the temperature and adding aquarium salt helps but that isn't a right quarantine tank. A small unheated and unfiltered jug will only make things worse.

Try using both Pima and Mela-fix at the same time. One is for fungicidal infections and one is for bacterial infections. I've used them together on many occasions with great results. They are all natural and won't harm anything in your tank. You can get them at Petco or Petsmart. Do a 25% water change in your tank to help rid it of the other medications you've tried. Also make sure all the carbon is removed from your filters. I've never lost a fish using both of these at once to treat a tank. Below is a link to give you an idea what to look for in the store. Good Luck.
