Most universities or colleges require an overseas student to demonstrate profeciency in the English language.

As a general rule, North America accepts TOEFL and UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand accept IELTS.

You should decide where you are going and check their testing requirements. Some universities accept many different tests (including TOEC and BEC, which are business English). If you have some other test score you might ask at the university you are applying for if they will accept that test.

Other things they might accept is doing highschool or a degree in English, in a English speaking country.

TOEFL is basically a test of reading and listening. You will need to be able to read, understand and answer a question related to your understanding.

IELTS, is similar when it comes to reading and listening, but also includes speaking and writing.

Some masters courses in the US require you do TOEFL plus test of written English (TWE) and Test of Spoken English (TSE).

You can find example tests online or go to your local education or foriegn languages bookstore, where you can by study books and practice exams.

Toefl Exam consist of two types which are paper-based toefl exam and internet-based test. Since I am a foreign student, the school here in New York advise me to choose the PAPER-BASED TEST. It is a combination of LISTENING like two students talking to each other about their project, GRAMMAR like choosing the right verb in the sentence and Reading like the Science thing which was about three paragraphs. It took me about 1.5 hours. Take note: It is time limited. Also, It is better for you to take the test here in abroad than your native country because sometimes they will not honor the test results.
