Ok. My brackets are in the wrong places!! Should read 2/(x-1) - 1/(x+1) = 1

Im hoping this isnt your last ditch attempt to finish math hw.
Multiply everything to get no divisors. You have x-1, x+1, so multiply both sides with (x-1)(x+1). This gives u
2x+2-(x-1)=x^2-1
simplify to
x+3=x^2-1
then move everything to one side to make things easier. I suggest keeping x^2 positive so
0=x^2-x-4
then use pythagorean
(1(+/-sqrt(1+16))/2
quantity of 1(+/-)root17 over 2 is your answer

Edit: king is right, im assuming (x+1) (x-1) are divisors

Assuming that this is 2/(x-1) - 1/(x+1) and not (2/x) - 1 - (1/x) + 1, then make a common denominator on the left and subtract:

2/(x-1) - 1/(x+1) = 1
2(x+1)/(x-1)(x+1) - (x-1)/(x-1)(x+1) = 1
[2(x+1) - (x-1)] / (x-1)(x+1) = 1
[2(x+1) - (x-1)] = (x-1)(x+1)
2x+2 - x+1 = (x-1)(x+1)
x+3 = x^2 - 1
0 = x^2 - x - 4
x = (1 + sqrt (17))/2 and (1 - sqrt (17))/2

2.(x + 1) - (x - 1) = (x - 1).(x + 1)
2x + 2 - x + 1 = x² - 1
0 = x² - x - 4
x = [1±√(1 + 16)] / 2
x = [1±√(17)] / 2
x = [1+√(17)] / 2 , [1-√(17)] / 2
It may be that you mean:-
2/x - 1 - 1/x - 1 = 1 which becomes a completetly different matter:-
1/x = 3
x = 1/3
Conclusion
Present questiion clearly using appropriate brackets so that there is no room for doubt.
Hope one of above answers is of use.

solve x-1 and x+1 first
x-1= 1 and x+1= -1
then 2/1- -1/1 become 2/1+1/1=3
then 3=1
x = 1/3

1/3

If the bracketing is correct.. it is [(1/x)-1] - [(1/x)+1]=1
[(2-x)/x] - [(1+x)/x] =1
[2-x-1-x] / x =1
2-x-1-x = x
1-2x = x
1 = 3x
1/3 = x
