I believe the word canine comes from the names of the constellations, Canis Major and Canis Minor. Sirius, which the proper name is "Alpha Canis Majoris" is the brightest star in that constellation. In mythology this constellation represents the Dog of Orion, the hunter. Sirius is located at the heel of Orion and accompanies him in his hunt of Taurus the Bull. It is interesting to note that the constellation Puppis (puppies?) is a smaller constellation under Canis Major and Canis Minor and also that we use the word "heel" to place a dog just to our side. Just an educated guess, but it makes sense to me.

It comes from the Latin word "canis," which means dog. I'm afraid that to answer the question of why they chose that word would require nothing less than a psychic medium or an Ouija board to contact the long dead people of ancient Rome. Good luck with that!

The word "canine" is derived from the Latin word "canis" which means "dog". "Canis familiaris" is the scientific (Latin) name for the domestic dog, "canis lupus" is the scientific name for the wolf. Many words come from Latin and Greek root words. Medical and scientific terminology use Latin words almost exclusively
