Between 1980 and 1990 a workers weekly wage increased by 140% to $180. Calculate the weekly wage in 1980?

Answer: $75

Working:

(at 1980) 100% - $____
240% - $180

Please note at this point that it's 240% not 140% because it said it increased BY 140%. Not increased to 140% So add the increase of 140% to the original 100%

Cross multiply and you'll get :

100%x $180/240% = $75

w = 1980 wage

if you use 1.4 / 180 = 1 / a

solve for a

1.4 a = 180

a = 128.57
