Whats there to do during Winter in Sydney & Melbourne?

I will be going over in mid July for 2 weeks - Right now, besides planning to Mt buller....I have no idea where are good to venture.

Are the open markets and shops or malls open as usual during this cold season?

It's not that cold in winter to be honest. Sure we have snow but you have to drive for hours to get there and it is only in the mountains, Melbourne and Sydney are on the coast.

Winter is Melbourne's wet season so expect a lot of rain. I live in Sydney and can assure you it is possibly the best season. Expect temps to be around 14-18 during the day and 2-6 at night. The sun is always shining though so if you're outside it is quite pleasant.

I'm not sure where you are from but if you are thinking that snow forces everything to close you are way off the mark. Everything happens as usual in winter except for the beach lifestyle - it's too cold to swim.

It's footy season in winter which means a lot in Melbourne (they are footy mad) so maybe go to a game just make sure you get seats under cover.

In Sydney you can do everything as usual - maybe a trip to the Blue Mountains if you're into the whole scenic thing, winery tours in Hunter Valley if that's your go or just enjoy the city, there's heaps to do.

id have to disagree with conda on one thing,i live in Melbourne and yes then winter temperature is a bit colder than Sydney but like the rest of Aussie we are also in a drought and the rain just isn't happening also here's a fact for you Sydney average rain fall is 1200mm a year compared to 700mm for Melbourne.

there is plenty to do down here-Victoria market, great shopping in chapel st and bridge rd and cbd plus great restaurants and bars and yes we are mad about footy (Aussie rules) so definately go and check out a game, you could also see a show i think miss Saigon is playing at the moment.

Melbourne's rain is mostly in the winter while Sydney's is in the summer/autumn. Both cities have the same number of rain days, it is just heavier when it rains in Sydney. In Melbourne it rains one day in two in winter while it is about one day in 3-4 in Sydney. Melbourne is also a lot colder than Sydney in winter.
