I suppose you could call my masters thesis a single "math problem". That one certainly took the longest. I had a similar project I did for my bachelors, where myself and two other students had to determine the optimal shape for a special revolving pipe that was being used by an industrial plant, such that the deepest points of internal wear were minimized. This would save the company millions in the long run, as it would mean not having to replace this piece of equipment so often.

I remember doing a proof for a geometry class when I was working on my master's degree. In those days we were using fanfold paper for printers and I started the problem on that and had it spread out from one end of the room to the other for several rows and worked on it for several days. If I remember right it was a take home test and we had a week to do it. There were 4 problems on the test and if we got one completely right we got an A. I finally was able to get that problem. I have no idea now what it was.
