I swim, paddle, float, what ever it takes until I have nothing left, and then I borrow from the future.

Both, I swim really good but I have negative buoyancy so if I stopped swimming I'd sink.
You could find your buoyancy by getting in a pool and getting into a ball shape and see if you float at surface level (positive) or sink just below surface level (neutral) or sink to the bottom of the pool (negative)

When I was 417lbs I would float for days....I've lost over 200lbs, now I just sink to the bottom.
