I'm going to be buying a new set of tires soon, and want to make sure I get something with a solid reputation and build quality.
What, in your opinion, are the top 3 brands of tires in terms of overall quality? (quality being traction, durability, tread life, quiet and comfortable ride, etc.)
Also, would you suggest avoiding off-brands? What are some specific brands you would avoid?

Naming different tire brands won't help you find the best tires. one brand of tires can make better sports tires than another brand.. and that same brand can make crappy off-road tires than that brand.
You'll have to find a good source like tirerack.com

Michellin, goodyear...the michelin seem to last the longest but i didnt thinked they stopped as well in the rain...i had 2 sets of goodyear wranglers and they were the best tires ive ever had for even wear....
however for the money i will never buy either again...they are both too expensive for what you get...id go with a cheaper brand

These quality factors are going to vary even among the same manufacturer. The tires are rated for various factors allowing you to compare the tires with others but typically as the speed rating and traction ratings increase the expected mileage from the tire will decrease because of the softer rubber.

I would go with BF Goodrich. They are a name known for the qualities you are looking for. The are the least expensive with a good reputation. I've trusted them for years. You can buy more expensive ones like Michellin, but you are paying way too much unless you are driving a sports or luxury car.

My brother will buy nothing but Michelin. He gets 80- 90,000 miles out of those tires but I can't afford them ,but I have been real happy with Bridgestone and Kelly and Goodyear
