Why do we keep our names????

For easy identification. It is much easier to refer to a hurricane by name than it is by the date and location it came ashore - if it did. The first person to name them was a meteorologist in Australia in the late 1890s, early 1900s. He named them after Greek gods and goddesses and also politicians. The first three Prime Ministers of Australia had a tropical cyclone named after them. The meteorologist was a little eccentric. His name was Clement Linley Wragge.

The current system of naming the storms started in the 1950s and 60s around the world and were originally always given women's names. Again Australia led the way and the PM in 1974, Gough Whitlam, declared that the Bureau of Meteorology was to alternate male and female names. In 1975 it started and the rest of the world followed suit so that by 1979 everyone was alternating male and female names.

Storms reaching tropical storm strength are given names, to assist in recording insurance claims, to assist in warning people of the coming storm, and to further indicate that these are important storms that should not be ignored. These names are taken from lists which vary from region to region and are drafted a few years ahead of time. The lists are decided upon, depending on the regions, either by committees of the World Meteorological Organization or by national weather offices involved in the forecasting of the storms.

Each year, the names of particularly destructive storms (if there are any) are "retired" and new names are chosen to take their place.
