Penalties in hockey require the penalised player to go off the ice and serve his penalty in the box. His team has to play short handed for the duration of the penalty, or until the other team scores a goal which ever comes first. If the other team scores a goal while the offebder is in the box, he comes out again, and his team now plays with a full 5 skaters and a goalie, again.
The minimum penalty time is two minutes, the next highest penalty is for 5 minutes, the next highest is 10 minutes and the longest is a game mis-conduct where the offending player is "tossed out for the rest of the game ".
Two minute penalties may be called for such things as tripping, hooking, holding the stick of another player, high sticking, elbowing, slashing, boarding, hitting from behind, interference, goal tender interference, a hand pass, unsportsman like conduct ( arguing with the offcials ), and delay of the game ( shooting the puck over the glass into the audience ).
